How many times have you heard someone say they’ve got the flu? Yet they are up and about, operating as normal, albeit a snotty nose? Proper flu symptoms can cause a whole world of misery and if you’ve been unfortunate to experience real flu, you will know the difference between a nasty common cold and flu.

There are lots of over the counter remedies for flu and flu symptoms however, here at Women UK, we’ve put together our top tips for helping you to relieve the stress of flu and feel better naturally (this is not to replace any medication that your doctor may prescribe).

  1. Fluids – The flu will leave most of us dehydrated, particularly if there is vomiting or diarrhea in the mix so drinking lots of fluids is essential. Stay away from caffeine though as it is a diuretic. Herbal teas, hone and lemon, water, fruit juices are all fine. A good indication as to whether you are taking in enough fluids will be the colour of your urine, which should be pale yellow to colourless. It goes without saying that avoiding alcohol is a must if you have the flu.
  1. Chicken Soup! Who of you have heard that chicken soup is good medicine? As it stands, there is some research that shows that chicken soup may help with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections so if you have flu symptoms, then it’s worth a try! Obviously if in doubt though, consult your GP immediately.
  2. Relax. Most of us, when we have the flu, will want to do absolutely nothing but lie in bed. Forget the hoovering, get friends to cover the school run and forgo exercise. If you feel flu like or have a very bad cold, one of the best medicines is rest. Likewise, getting a proper full night sleep will help your immune system to work better and fight infection.
  3. Moist Atmosphere. Moist air helps ease nasel congestion and sore throats. Have a steamy shower or just sit in a steam filled room if you don’t feel up to a shower. Inhaling steam will ease the conjection and make you feel much better. A great tip is to have a bowl of hot water with a towel over it and put you head above the water so that you inhale the steam – a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil will really help in this situation.
  4. A warm compress on the nose and forehead is a really quick and easy way to relieve headaches or sinus pain.
  5. Salt water. Gargling salt water is a very effective way to get rid of the thick mucas that can collect at the back of the throat. It will also help to ease blocked ears. Recommended in the morning and before bedtime.
  6. Hot Toddy. Honey, lemon, hot water and a tipple of something a little stronger, can be very soothing if you are suffering from colds or flu symptoms.

Most of us will be unfortunate to have ‘the flu’ at one point in our lives and generally it will be in the winter months and it doesn’t seem to matter how healthily we eat or how much exercise we do, it is one of those horrible germs that knocks the best of us down. Following the above steps won’t cure the flu, but they will go along way to making you feel more comfortable.

Here’s our favourite Hot Toddy recipe:

  • 25 mls whiskey (or brandy if you prefer)
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 100 mls of hot boiled water
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and 1 slice of lemon

Simply add all the above ingredients into a mug, sit back, relax and sip.
