Aluminium Foil: Terrifying Reasons to Avoid it this Christmas

How often do you cook with aluminium foil?

If you’re like most people, you might use it for wrapping your food, cooking, grilling, baking, or storing your leftovers.

Possibly even on a daily basis?

Aluminium foil has been a go to staple in the home for many, many years and with reason. It’s a very versatile product.

But did you know that aluminium causes Alzheimer’s, dementia, osteoporosis and other serious health problems?

How is Aluminium Foil Harmful?

Unlike iron and other metals or minerals, the body does not need or want Aluminium.

There is no mechanism to process it, therefore what we ingest gets stored by the body and accumulates over time.

The kidneys, brain, lungs, liver and thyroid are all susceptible to damage from Aluminium build up.

Brain Damage:

Your brain is one of the main places our bodies stores aluminium.  Therefore, it is the most affected.  It accumulates in the brain with age and can lead to MS, Chronic fatigue, epilepsy, ADD and other cognitive disorders, like alzheimer’s and dementia.

Osteoporosis:

Aluminium can also build up in your bones, taking place of calcium and therefore deteriorating your bone quality.  This inhibits bones mineralisation, which results in osteoporosis.

Premature Aging:

It was found that premature aging and aluminium can be linked, due to the oxidative stress on cellular DNA.  Aluminium is a pro-oxidant and causes oxidative damage both on its own and in synergy with iron.

Depleting Stores of Essential Minerals:

Aluminium robs the body of magnesium, calcium and iron.  A study on the connection between Alzheimer’s and aluminium found that, “aluminium competes with, and substitutes for, essential metals (primarily Mg2+, iron and Ca2+ ions) in or on proteins and their co-factors.”

How to Avoid Aluminium Foil

Unfortunately, aluminium is everywhere.  Antacids, astringents, buffered Aspirin, additives, antiperspirants and cosmetics are all products that contain aluminium.  It has also been found on kitchen utensils, pots, pans and on some packaged foods.

According to the World Health Organization, it is safe to intake 40mg of aluminium per kilogram of bodyweight.  But since aluminium is one of the most widely distributed metals on the planet, it is best to avoid using it whenever you can.

Avoid Cooking with Aluminium Foil

One of the biggest issues comes from cooking with aluminium foil, as the high temperature causes the aluminium to leach into your food.

Acidic foods have also been identified as a concern. Therefore, avoid using aluminium around citrus, tomatoes and spices.  Even raw, these foods will make the foil leach aluminium straight into your meal.

Another tip is to purchase products free of aluminium.  Especially when it comes to cookware, personal hygiene and processed foods.

Finally, if possible, find a water filter that filters out aluminium.
