For three days each year the dedicated showground perched on top of the hill on the eastern side of Wadebridge is transformed into a living town. The Royal Cornwall Show bustles with life, energy, agriculture, entertainment and so much more.
Cornwall’s biggest and best-loved annual event is a significant fixture on the local calendar. It’s probably the biggest in terms of numbers, last year 126,256 people attended. For many the great Cornish get-together, as organiser the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association like to call it, is not to be missed. It is the first date pencilled into many a new diary at the start of each year.
It’s not just about livestock, poultry, flower show and the like. If you love to shop, then you’ll be right at home at the Show. When the event takes place this year, on the 9th, 10th and 11th June, there will be more than 1000 trade stands for visitors peruse. It represents a veritable feast of shopping opportunities. The choice is immense; you can browse and buy until your hearts content. The array of goods and services that can find the length and breadth of the showground is mind boggling. You’ll find everything from quality country clothing and range cookers to hot tubs and home furniture. It is safe to say that there really is something for everyone.
It’s not always easy these days to find something that’s a little bit different. However, many of the stands at the Show offer products that you can’t easily find elsewhere, if at all. The Westcountry Arts, Crafts & Design marquee is one of the places you’ll find a whole host of unique items on offer. It’s home to a selection of superb local craftsmen and women displaying their wares. It is innovative, decorative, useful and highly individual.
Around 80 crafts people will be offering everything from jewellery to hand made furniture within the marquee. There is so much to look at – and of excellent quality too. What’s more, it’s on display and on sale.
The Rural Crafts Association marquee also attracts tremendous interest. The display by members of the Association is nothing less than stunning in its variety and quality. The exhibitors creations are on sale and get snapped up quickly.
If you are looking for clothing, you’ll not be disappointed. Quality brands can be located on many stands. No doubt show-only special offers will be plentiful, just in case you needed any further persuasion to add some extra numbers to your 2016 wardrobe. Look out for Isles of Scilly-based clothing creators 49 Degrees West. They are again designing this year’s official Royal Cornwall Show clothing and will be selling it on their stand at the event.
If you are looking to update your wheels then you need look no further than the Show’s motor fair.
You’ll find all of the world’s major car manufacturers represented within this huge, but temporary, showroom. You’ll be able to kick the tyres and test out the gadgets on the latest models, big and small. With exclusive Show deals galore it’s not surprising that hundreds of cars sold are sold at the event.
The Royal Cornwall is perhaps a very apt place to celebrate the area’s ever growing reputation as a foodie capital within the UK. The Cornwall Food & Farming Pavilion has grown over the past 25 years to house numerous local food producers. It’s one of the busiest places on the showground, the opportunity to taste and buy the best food and drink Cornwall has to offer might be something to do with that. The range on offer is amazing and the quality sublime. It’s hard not to leave this area of the show without a bag full of treats to take home and enjoy.
All that retail therapy is hard work. A hunger is bound to be worked up. This can be cured by a visit
to one of the numerous catering outlets on-site. They serve up a range of options to suit all tastes and budgets.
Similarly, a thirst can be quenched just as easily. It’d be rude not to test Tarquin’s Gin, stop-off at the Pimm’s bar or take a quick pit-stop at Sharp’s Brewery marquee, to name but a few of the rehydration options available.
Those in possession of a Show membership badge can avail themselves of the members’ facilities that are laid. It’s the perfect place to kick back and relax. The comfortable surroundings of the Royal Cornwall Pavilion Centre and the marquees within its gardens are home to the quality food and drink offering for the members to enjoy.
Hub-box will be serving up their renowned burgers, a gourmet sandwich bar, authentic Indian and Sri Lankan curry outlet and oyster bar are among the members’ catering concessions. For the first time a pop-up Mannings Restaurant will be providing the more formal dining experience for members.
Fortunately, the Show runs for three days. You might find that you’ll need more than one day to take in everything there is to see and do and take full advantage of this shopping heaven before it disappears for another 12 months.
