MLM is like a dirty word? What image do we conjure up when we think of MLM or Network Marketing? Seen all the hype on social media around Network Marketing Companies? Ever been confused about how a “home business” works? Most people have heard the term MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) and sometimes associate with a negative perception?
Not only are “home businesses” or “MLM’s” very interesting, they are successful. Now one of the fastest growing business models Internationally, many of the longest standing organizations are adopting and using this business model. Forbes have noted ‘MLM is a marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not only for sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of others they recruit, creating a downline of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels of compensation.’ So what’s the problem? Next time you meet someone who runs a “home business” or “MLM” give them a high five for taking their career and life into their own hands and becoming an entrepreneur.
So why has MLM companies been a frequent subject of criticism from people? Criticism has focused on a buzz word of ‘pyramid’ schemes. This form of business is actually illegal and not practised. Other concerns from well meaning public might also be price-fixing of products, high initial start-up costs, emphasis on recruitment of lower-tiered salespeople over actual sales, encouraging if not requiring salespeople to purchase and use the company’s products, potential exploitation of personal relationships which are used as new sales and recruiting targets, complex and sometimes exaggerated compensation schemes, and cult-like techniques which some groups use to enhance their members’ enthusiasm and devotion. Eesh! So what’s the good news you might ask?
However, as aforementioned, you may know people that sell products like myself from Nuskin Enterprises, or from Younique, Forever Living, Juice Plus, Mary Kay, Acti Labs etc because they believe in the products and the companies that stand behind them. These companies empower those who sell their products to actually establish their own businesses, selling the products. Hence what can be sometimes the over exuberance and excitement that comes from the newer distributors is genuine optimism at the start of something better for them. This model is very attractive to many entrepreneurial-minded people who do not want to have a boss watching over them but also want some pre-established structure and support. Thinking Franchise? The franchise model also was slated for many years before becoming an established business model. Most MLM organizations provide a very robust infrastructure and great training as well as impeccable rewards (hello free cars and trips!). I am personally just back from a luxury five star all expenses paid trip to Capetown, South Africa. In all my years in the corporate world, I was never rewarded as generously for my hard work!
Carole says ‘I have had so much business experience having owned and managed companies over the years that I was initially attracted to Nuskin and it’s MLM structure for it’s low risk entry with the opportunity to earn a six figure income based on my own efforts. In the early days, having met a few of these people within the company was reassuring it could be done! What I learned very early on is that the business opportunity is the same for everyone, the only difference is what people do with it! With Nuskin, who specialise in anti ageing, the idea of anti ageing going out of business was pretty slim and coupled with a company’s strong financial history, it was a winner for me!’ ‘ With five children and a desire to create not just an ordinary life but one with wealth, choices, time and fun, MLM is a great fit. I love what I do and the job satisfaction from helping people create that solid business with good financial returns creates security and freedom for them is totally rewarding.’
